Riding for Babies

The Foundation is proud to announce the continued support and sponsorship of St. John's Pub for the 4th Annual "Riding for Babies" Motorcycle/Poker Run that will be held on Sunday, September 19, 2010. Proceeds from this event will benefit premature children and their families through the assistance and grant giving program of the Foundation.

Registration is $25/ person and $10/ passenger. Registration is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. John's Pub, 9623 Wicker Avenue, St. John, Indiana. The registration fee includes one poker hand for each person/ passenger, meal ticket, draft beer, and prizes. Breakfast will be available for purchase at St. John's Pub for $4. The first ride out will be at 11 a.m. and the last ride in will be at 5 p.m. All are welcome!

The ride will began and end at St. John's Pub with the first poker card draw at St. John's Pub. Additional stops will be Traxx Bar & Grill, Marti's Place, Ricardo's Pizzeria, and Pick-Ups Bar & Grill. Prizes will be awarded for the Best Poker Hand, Worst Poker Hand, and 50/50 drawing. You will have an opportunity to purchase an additional poker card for $5 at the last stop - St. John's Pub.

If you are unable to make the ride, but would like to join us for dinner, meal tickets can be purchased for $10 per ticket. Commemorative T-shirts will be available and the Miller Lite Girls will make a special guest appearance.

Ride for Charity

Spanky�s Bar & Grill has selected the Nathan C. Splant Foundation as the charity to partner with for their annual motorcycle run - �Ride for Charity". Spanky�s believes in giving back to the community they serve and "we are very grateful to have been chosen as the recipients for this annual event" said Co-Chair, Founder Kim Splant. Proceeds from this event will benefit premature children and their families thru the assistance and grant giving program of the Nathan C. Splant Foundation.

The Poker Run will be held Sunday, July 18 through the country roads of Illinois and Indiana. Registration is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Spanky�s, 15213 West 101^st Avenue, Dyer, Indiana. All are welcome and the first ride out will be at 11:00 a.m. and last ride in will be at 5:00 p.m.

Racing for Babies Fundraiser

SCHERERVILLE, IN (MAY 29, 2010) - Join us for the 5th Annual "Racing for Babies" fundraiser this Saturday, May 29 at Illiana Motor Speedway.

The "Racing for Babies" event was created by Phil and Kim Splant, who wanted to host a family-friendly event to benefit local premature children and families through the Foundation's grant giving program. The Splant family was greatly affected in 2004 when their son, Nathan, was born 15 weeks premature. Fortunately, Nathan will live a normal life and the family "wanted to give back to the community" and the Nathan C. Splant Foundation evolved in 2007.

Illiana Motor Speedway, along with Five Star Auto Bodies, local businesses, volunteers of the community and friends will assist the Splant family and the Foundation to host this annual event on the grounds of Illiana Motor Speedway, 7211 US 30, on Saturday, May 29. Gates open at 4 p.m. and the first race will be at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids and 7 and under are free. There will be plenty of fun for the whole family - including more than 25 basket drawings, 50/50 drawing, face painting, the Racing for a Cause and Give Five Program (autograph the race car hood for a minimum $5 donation) and a ultimate racing experience. Special appearances by the Schererville Hooter Girls, Aaron's Lucky Dog Mascot and the Texas Roadhouse Mascot. Proceeds from the monies generated from the drawings, Racing for a Cause and Give Five and Sponsor a Lap will benefit the Nathan C. Splant Foundation - helping premature children and their families.

Guest Speaker at The Family Compass, Inc.

On Saturday, May 8, The Family Compass, Inc. invited the Foundation as a guest speaker at their monthly meeting with foster parents whom are fostering micro-preemies. Kim Splant, Founder and Co-Chair, attended the meeting and provided information about her personal experience and some of the challenges that can be expected of a child born prematurely.

The Foundation also extended an invitation to Michelle Gessert, PT CEIM, Pediatric Clinical Specialist at Community Hospital. Michelle graciously accepted our invitation and provided pertinent information to the foster families at a professional and personal level. We would like to thank Michelle for taking the time out of her busy schedule and sharing her expertise with the families.

The Family Compass, Inc., a not-for-profit, IV-E, licensed child placement agency, provides therapeutic foster care services to children who have become wards of the state. The Family Compass works with children, their community support systems, family case managers, foster parents, and/or biological parents to further the ultimate goals of reunification or independent living. Guest Speaker for the Hammond Hispanic Community Committee

On Tuesday, May 4, 2010, the Foundation was invited by the Hammond Hispanic Community Committee (HHCC) on behalf of Eve Gomez to be a guest speaker at their monthly meeting. Phil Splant, Chair, attended the meeting and gave a presentation about the Foundation. Nathan Splant accompanied Phil and also took part and distributed brochures to the audience.

The HHCC is committed to disseminating information from organizations and businesses that will benefit the community. HHCC meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Greater Hammond Community Services. More than half a million babies - 1 out of 8 - are born too soon each year. Babies who survive an early birth face serious lifelong health problems. The Foundation with the support of Illiana Motor Speedway, Five Star Auto Bodies and the #52 Limited Late Model Race Car are giving back and "Racing for a Cause".

"Racing for a Cause and Give Five Program" is an addition to our "Racing for Babies" fundraiser on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Illiana Motor Speedway. Here is your opportunity to Give $5 and have your name on the Five Star donated hood of the #52 Limited Late Model stock car. The race car hood will also be race ready for the feature event of that evening. You will also have an opportunity, the night of the event, to autograph the hood with a $5 donation. Special Appearance at Lincoln Elementary

The #52 Limited Late Model made a special appearance at Lincoln Elementary (Nathan's school) on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 for "show and tell" and to also promote the Racing for Babies Fundraiser at Illiana Motor Speedway on Saturday, May 29, 2010. Kindergarten thru 5th grade were able to get an up close look of the race car and hear the roar of the engine. Phil answered questions from the students about racing and race car safety. The Texas Roadhouse Armadillo Mascot also arrived to greet the children during their lunch hour and recess.

New Board Member Announcement

The Nathan C. Splant Foundation is pleased to announce Shannon Nassenstein as a new Board Member to its Board of Trustees. Shannon has volunteered for the Foundation since the beginning and has seen the joy of the families we have helped. Shannon is a Registered Nurse (12 years) on the Critical Care Cardiac floor at Christ Hospital. While her main nursing focus is adults, she knows the physical, emotional, and financial impact a premature child can have on a family. Shannon is married and a mother of three children. "I am honored to be part of this local community organization." We are grateful for the opportunity to work with an individual that demonstrates such a high level of commitment and enthusiasm. On February 11, it was announced that 600,000 volunteers have already participated in the Give a Day ~ Get a Disney Day program. Thanks to the exceptional programs and opportunites provided by the thousands of participating organizations, it's anticipated that the program is forecasted to come to a close very shortly. The following measures are being taken in preparation for the program's conclusion:

Effective immediately, no new applications will be accepted to participate in the program.
On Friday, March 5, all volunteer opportunities for the Nathan C. Splant Foundation have been removed from the search at www.DisneyParks.com.
Only volunteeers who have completed the registration and expressed interest in an opportunity prior to March 5 can still complete the sign-up process until the one million ticket goal has been reached. Volunteers should follow the instructions and click on the link in the e-mail they received from HandOn Network when you first expressed interest in your volunteer opportunity (i.e. Racing for Babies, Great Cell Phone Drive, Spring into Aciton).

Give a Day - Get a Disney Day

The Nathan C. Splant Foundation is a participating organization for Give a Day ~ Get a Disney Day and we want to inspire you to volunteer a day of service to your local community. So we're celebrating these volunteers' good works by giving each of them a 1-day, 1-theme park ticket to the Disneyland� Resort or Walt Disney World� Resort, FREE.

If you've never volunteered before or are a seasoned volunteer, this is a fabulous opportunity to Make a Difference in your community and earn a FREE PASS to any Disney Park. If you are under the age of 18 you must have a parent or guardian volunteer with you to qualify and we are promoting family volunteering, although individuals over the age of 18 can earn the pass as well. Ladies and Gentlemen, rev up your engines....this year's annual "Racing for Babies" is scheduled for Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Illiana Motor Speedway, Schererville, Indiana.

The Foundation is offering the following opportunities to support this event:

Message from the Founders

During the holiday season, more than ever, our thoughts turn gratefully to those who have made the Nathan C. Splant Foundation possible. This web site is dedicated to helping local families affected by prematurity. The site was created as a result of our personal journey and experiences of the very early birth of our son, Nathan. We came to realize that mom and dads needed a resource to help with the everyday life changes of those born too early and too small.

The web site is your resource for tips, support, and offers a forum for you to share your story with other parents.

The Foundation�s Racing for Babies, Riding for Babies and Prematurity Awareness Campaign, continue to enhance the lives of those touched by prematurity with our grant giving program. We have also continued to provide funding earmarked towards prematurity research.

We want to thank our corporate and individual donors and friends for all of your support in attending our events, as well as for continually sharing your thoughts of good wishes and suggestions which enable us to better serve the local community. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of premature children and their families.
